Collagen vs Whey for Muscle: What Trials Show

Can collagen replace whey, and does adding it improve a protein shake? Read the actual study comparisons, including the limits of a positive 2026 trial.

Collagen is not a well-supported replacement for whey when the main goal is building or retaining muscle. Human studies generally favor whey for stimulating muscle protein synthesis. Adding collagen to whey is a separate question: a blend can work without proving that collagen adds a benefit beyond an equivalent amount of whey.

The distinction matters when choosing a powder or paying more for a blend. This guide separates the measured outcomes and comparators in the original studies, including a July 2026 trial. It does not rank brands or assess collagen's effects on skin or joint symptoms.

Equal protein grams can produce different responses#

In a 2023 randomized trial, 45 recreationally active men and women received 30 g of whey, 30 g of collagen or a noncaloric placebo after squats. Researchers used blood samples and muscle biopsies to study the following five hours.

Whey increased synthesis of the muscle's contractile proteins compared with placebo; collagen did not. Neither supplement significantly increased muscle connective-protein synthesis beyond exercise alone. The tested collagen supplied substantially fewer essential amino acids and less leucine than whey. Original trial and methods

These are short-term protein-synthesis measurements, not kilograms of muscle gained or a test of tendon healing. A nonsignificant result in that experiment does not prove collagen can never affect another tissue or outcome.

What about protein across the whole day?#

A 2024 trial studied 31 older men. After a week on a standardized diet, participants added two daily servings of whey, pea or collagen protein for another week. Whey and pea increased integrated muscle protein synthesis; collagen did not. Participants maintained habitual activity and avoided intense exercise. Full study

This supports considering protein source alongside the total grams. It does not establish long-term muscle growth in young lifters, or prove that every plant protein product behaves like the tested pea protein. The study also illustrates why avoiding whey does not automatically make collagen the best alternative.

Does a whey-and-collagen blend outperform whey?#

Check what the comparison group actually received.

A trial published in 2025 gave 28 young men either a blend containing 25 g whey plus 5 g collagen or a noncaloric placebo after exercising one leg. The blend increased contractile-protein synthesis in both legs. Muscle connective-protein synthesis increased in the rested leg, but the between-group difference was not significant in the exercised leg. Original blend trial

There was no whey-only group. The trial therefore cannot tell us whether adding collagen improves on whey alone. It measured muscle tissue over five hours, not injured tendons or long-term recovery. The study included collagen-industry funding and an author employed by the collagen supplier; those disclosures belong alongside its findings.

How to read the positive 2026 trial#

An eight-week trial enrolled 40 resistance-trained men, with ten in each group. Its combined group received 30 g whey plus 10 g collagen daily; the whey-only group received 30 g whey. The authors reported larger improvements in the combined group, including an estimated muscle-mass increase of 2.66 kg versus 1.59 kg with whey alone. Accepted manuscript, methods and limitations

Two limitations change the purchasing conclusion:

  • Protein amounts differed. The authors explicitly acknowledge that the study cannot isolate a collagen-specific benefit from the extra protein.
  • Muscle mass was estimated by bioelectrical impedance. The authors caution that hydration can affect this estimate; it is not direct imaging of new muscle.

This is a positive result worth testing further, not proof that a collagen blend is superior to an equal-protein whey serving. It also does not supply a personal muscle-gain forecast.

Compare the label with the question you want answered#

QuestionWhat to check
Am I replacing whey with collagen?Equal listed protein grams do not establish equal muscle-supporting effects. Consider the protein sources across your meals.
Am I adding collagen to an existing shake?Check whether the cited trial compared equal total protein or simply gave one group more.
Does the blend disclose each ingredient's amount?A total protein figure alone may not reveal how much comes from whey versus collagen.
Am I buying it for skin, joints or an injury?Ask for evidence on that specific outcome. Muscle-biopsy results do not answer those questions.

NIH's Office of Dietary Supplements emphasizes an adequate diet as the foundation for exercise nutrition and cautions that evidence for individual ingredients does not establish the effects of every combination. A supplement can fill a dietary gap; a longer ingredient list does not demonstrate better results. NIH exercise-supplement guidance

Before buying, compare the disclosed protein sources, serving amounts and cost for the dietary role you need. Check ingredient and allergen labels, and seek individual advice if a medical condition or prescribed diet affects your protein choices. These studies do not establish a conversion factor that turns collagen grams into “equivalent whey grams.”

If breakouts are the reason you are considering a switch, read the separate whey-and-acne evidence guide. For judging progress, the muscle, hair and skin tracking guide explains why scale or lean-mass changes need context. Neither question requires assuming a more expensive blend will work better.
